Edwards seeking advice on youth vote from...John Mayer????

So says this tidbit I ran across on the celeb gossip site perezhilton.com. Yes, I know the source is totally bogus, but if true I find this to be a strange choice for Mr. Edwards, who I think highly of.

Wannabe U.S. President John Edwards has a new friend.

The politician, vying for the Democratic party's nomination, struck up a conversation with musician John Mayer at last week's Time 100 party and the two really hit it off.

Edwards has scheduled a meeting with Mayer, who offered to help him "connect" to the youth market.

"He was talking about the language of young people, his generation," Edwards said. "He basically said, 'You've got to get me in the first twenty seconds. I watch movies on YouTube, and if they're 25 seconds long, they're five seconds too long."

John Mayer appeals to people under 30?

While celebrities do have a place in politics, and can be quite useful at helping candidates both raise money and get their message out to the youth vote, I find this to be a pretty sad connection here.

Now, I doubt that Edwards has any trouble at all lining up some solid youth support, as I see regularly here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but John Mayer? Really? Wouldn't Edwards be better served by listening to actual youth voters instead of this clown?

Its just irritating, because I like Edwards almost as much as I like Obama, and I'm not digging the path he's choosing here.

Ummm this may not be an obvious question (none / 0)

but why do you dislike John Mayer so much? He seems like a pretty cool guy, hip, and writes progressive songs.

And its not like Obama and Hillary arent using star power to help their campaigns in a number of ways so I guess I'm not getting the "sad connection".

Well I guess if you're really into John Mayer, or don't know anything about him, then this might not bother you too much.

Personally I'm not inclined to make a full case against him other than to say what I think about him.

1. Dates Jessica Simpson

  1. IMO writes the worst freaking song lyrics I've ever heard from a big-label performer
  2. Dabbles in stand-up comedy. Yes, its bad.
  3. Reminds me of Quasimodo.
  4. Has a very narrow appeal...relatively young white people.

But that's just for me. Obviously YMMV.

Re: and in the end... (none / 0)

yes, how dare someone post their opinion in such a forum. I'm sure that if I had framed John Mayer's endorsement as a good thing, this diary, for all the three minutes I spent working on it, would have gone right to the top of the rec list.

John Mayer (none / 0)

is quite cool for his age. He's seems politically and socially active and also seems very intelligent. He writes good music and it's rare that I even think that with the crap that's passing for music today. Mayer is a regular at the Steve Jobs Apple announcement events where he ususally either helps Steve with a demo or performance for the audience after the presentation. Al Gore is usually in the audience too, as well as most of the top technology guys. Google. Yahoo. Sony. Steve Jobs have a good lock on young people with his iPod. The crowd that this guy runs with isn't too shabby.  If he likes John Edwards, that's actually a good thing. Every little bit helps.

It's an election, not an auction.

It seems he is talking to the guy to help him but, I don't think it is his only tap into the youth vote.
Like the poster I am an Obama supporter but, I dont' think Edwards is really hurting himself here.

so why am I surprised to learn that (none / 0)

a diary questioning John Edwards is written by an Obama supporter.

I have a lot of respect for Senator Obama, but based on the activities I see on-line, I'm starting to question whether he is really interested in running a positive primary campaign. After all, his supporters seem to spend more time on-line trying to bring John Edwards down than in actually supporting Barack Obama. Based on this, perhaps I should reconsider Obama as a second choice.

so sad, so sad

Edwards and Mayer started to talk at the TIME 100 dinner of which both John Mayer and Elizabeth Edwards were honored. Then, Mayer offer to Edwards to help.

It is a meeting to discuss youth and getting them involved, and what would you have Edwards say something like "get lost" - of course not.

Regardless of what you think of Jessica Simpson and John Mayer, they do have a relatively large youthful following, and everyone is about getting the youth vote aren't they?
